Food is any material consumed to give nutrition to an organism, usually in a living system. In most cases food is of plant, animal, or fungi source, and has necessary nutrients, including proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, or minerals, which are specific to that type of food. Humans cannot survive without food. It is the source of energy required for all body functions and growth; it sustains the body, mind, and spirit. In addition, food is a key element in keeping the population of a community or society healthy by regulating metabolism, maintaining the balance of nutritional requirements and serving as a basic resource for the community.
The body uses food to satisfy the demands of hunger, thirst, sexual desire, and to survive in a variety of circumstances. It is important to consume a sufficient amount of food on a daily basis to meet the energy requirements of the day, and to avoid deficiency in essential nutrient intakes. With modern society, people have become much more aware of the importance of foods in our lives and their role in improving health and disease. People have become much more conscious of their diets and have adopted many methods to eat a well-balanced diet and to eat large amounts of foods that are beneficial to our health.
Foods rich in vitamins A, D, E, and K are known to be good for the health. Foods that are high in complex carbohydrates such as whole grains, cereals, potatoes, rice, pasta, and fruits are also recommended, as these foods contain complex carbohydrates that are not broken down easily. Foods high in unsaturated fatty acids, are considered healthy since they provide the body with essential fatty acids that are important to cell membranes and hormones, and to keep the heart and lungs healthy.
