The Basics of Poker

Info Aug 22, 2023

Poker is an extremely popular card game played by millions of people worldwide. It has many variations, but is essentially a game of 5 cards and the highest hand wins. It is a gambling game, so play only with money you are willing to lose. Generally, you should only gamble an amount you are comfortable losing 200 times (a nickel for our games).

In most poker games players must “ante” something (the amount varies by game). Then they get dealt two cards each and the betting starts. Betting goes around the table until everyone calls or folds their hand. Once the betting is over the dealer puts three more cards face up on the board that everyone can use (the flop). Then the betting continues until everyone calls or folds again.

After the flop, the dealer puts a final card on the board that everyone can use (the river). Then betting again until everyone calls or folds again. When everyone has called again the final betting round is over and the highest hand wins the pot.

Most poker books will tell you to only play the best hands, and this certainly makes sense if you are trying to win the most money. However, if you are just playing for fun it is sometimes good to play any hand that has at least a chance of winning. The highest probability hands are the full houses and flushes, which consist of three or more matching cards of one rank and then two or more matching cards of another rank.
