A designer is someone who designs the actual form or layout of something from scratch, before it is even made. There are two major jobs within the design industry, these are the principal designer and the sub-principal designer. The sub-principal designer on the other hand, will be working with the architects, engineers, and other types of staff to help create designs that can be built into existing buildings or structures. Designers who are on the principal team will generally stay with the company for a year or more, working on one project at a time, after which they can go into a job with another firm.
Designers can use their skills and experience to help with a huge range of projects. You can work as a principal designer helping to shape the future of a building, creating the entire structure, while also being involved in the day-to-day interaction design work, such as designing the lighting scheme and drafting the layouts for the stairway. Designers also help create the corporate identity for businesses, helping to create logos and business cards. Interior designers can also become involved in the architectural process, helping to create the interior of a room and planning the colors and flooring. The interaction design work enables designers to become skilled in interaction design, which includes the use of computers in a number of ways including creating digital signage, interactive whiteboards, user feedback systems, and more.
